Chiaroscuro is an interactive multimedia exhibition exploring the interplay of light and shadow that shapes the human experience. In collaboration with augmented reality software studio Elysium AR, the work integrates video, animation, contemporary dance, and narrative performance with augmented reality to invite audiences on a journey into the shadow aspects of the self, encouraging reflection and fostering a deeper understanding of the inevitable challenges that life presents.
Named after the Italian Renaissance painting technique that uses stark contrasts between light and shadow to create depth and dramatic impact, Chiaroscuro applies this principle through its visual, metaphorical, and thematic aesthetic.
The work illuminates the balance between opposing yet complementary forces, demonstrating that joy and suffering, strength and vulnerability, hope and fear are not contradictions to be resolved, but essential and mutually reinforcing dimensions of a fully lived life.At its core, Chiaroscuro is guided by a simple philosophy: darkness is not something to be feared or avoided, but something to be understood. While our instinct may be to run from suffering, uncertainty, and vulnerability, it is through confronting and integrating these experiences that we discover resilience, wisdom, and wholeness.Into the darkness, to find the light.
